Question Dog-Bitches & Estrus - how should I care for her?

I was wondering if anyone has any advice on this topic or has ever experienced it or actually seen it happen before... That is, female dogs having a period. My Catahoula came with my fiancé (I would've preferred not to have a dog right now but oh well). She was unfixed and full of puppies - not his fault though. These people were kicking her around and beat her so bad that her tail broke and is kinked now. The guy who was the previous owner yelled at my fiancé not to tell him how to raise his dog when he got upset whilst witnessing the abuse. My fiancé told him, "Fine, I won't tell you how to raise your dog, I'll take your dog." And that's how she got rescued. She's a purebred and so the puppies all went to good homes in under a week's time. Anyway, I'm about to get her spayed, but the vet said she needed to go through one estrus cycle before spaying since she had puppies so recently. She's well taken care of and is never allowed to wander (I won't even let her play with male dogs)! Buuut, it looks like she may be going into proestrus (the period part) very, very soon. How does one deal with this? Do they make diapers or pads for dogs? Also, how much blood gets discharged? How often should the diaper be changed - do they make diapers designed for the estrus cycle or are they just potty training diapers? How long will she bleed for? This is a mystery to me!

I do know they make doggy diapers for it but beyond that not much use for knowledge on this one.

I always thought they were supposed to clean it up themselves, but I suppose if she's sleeping on the bed, it could drip onto the sheets and leave a stain... What a conundrum.

The diaper is no big deal. Our oldest dog who is fifteen, is one most of the time. They get used to it, and with her estrus, it'll be over soon.

get a couple, so if she really soils one you don't have to wait to wash it. I use maternity pads, for the most protection (our dog is incontinent so more need for absorption).

There's a lot of info online about the female cycle, this is just one. So you know the timeframe to expect. http://vetmedicine.about.com/od/preg.../k9_estrus.htm

hopefully no lasting behavioural issues from the abuse. Good job getting her out of there!

The problem I think is that even if they clean themselves it doesn't take away the scent which gets carried not only by the female but also upon the clothing of her people. Granted not as strong as the physical material influence but can still cause issues.

I do recall my aunts saying people would be so much better off if they just though about what they'd do for themselves as women and the precautions they'd take. Though the host is not human the feminine energy and presence area the same.

I separated this out of an article - if someone didn't know you were talking about dogs... AHAHAHAHA! "Horny males will hang around outside the house, especially strays. They are a danger at all times as they will go to any lengths possible to copulate."

Hahaha indeed!

The truly horrible thing that happened here a while ago; both my dog and TheThing's are intact males, and his old old lady (in the diaper, not me) is spayed. However - some lovely dog trivia most people don't want to know - when anal sacs become infected they give off a pheromone that mimics estrogen, and the males act JUST LIKe they're around a bitch in heat. So here's this very sweet, but very geriatric Lab girl, with wobbly hind end and fully deaf to boot, fending off not one but two large, horny, agitated males.

Joy for all involved - NOT.

LOL! This may be worse... I found a thread where someone asked if they make doggy tampons and if not, would a human one be okay to use. No kidding!: http://www.matchmypet.com/Forum/Foru...sageId=5009562

I doubt I can look at it. I've seen so much utter idiocy in my years in the dog world, it's mind boggling.
Having a serene day so far so - I'll take your word for it.

Some people aren't missing screws - they just don't have any to begin with
