Debate is one thing. TELLING someone that their beliefs are false or in error is an insult.
But doesn't debating usually starts an arugment?

There is a difference between civilised debate and arguments.

I am not trying to pick on any religion in particular, and most of these people don't act like this, but here are two examples of the way things go online:

Person A: "I believe that God is actually the flying spagetti monster, and a happy fantasy for the sheep like mind."

Person B: "I believe that God is real and not a fantasy because I have seen miracles occur in my life."

Person A: "What attributed the miracles to God and not to coincidence?"

Person B: "Both times blah blah blah..."

Person A: "That is a good story and I am glad the snake didn't eat you, but I still think you were just lucky."

.................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ..................

Person C: "God is the light and love of the world and those who do not follow him are dammed to eternal torment."

Person D: "Your God is a malicious manipulative blood thirsty God who demands to be in control of little weakling minds like yours. Break free from your little sheep reality and find strength and truth in the freedom of growing your own divinity with Satan."

Person E: "You are both going to hell. The true way to enlightenment is through Buddha."

Person C: "Heathens are blinded by Satan."

Person D: "Christians are blinded by the sunshine from the assholes of fake angels."

Person E: "You two sound like dam idiots."

Don't make it personal. Keep it objective and preferable unbiased. Don't assume a position of absolute truth even if you believe you have it, just out of respect. Attack the argument not the person (ad hominem). Insert smilies and a good IMO as needed to make sure the person understands your attitude, as words sometimes easily misconvey emotions. And finally, don't be a hypersensitive drama queen and get yourself butt-hurt by every little thing. We are all adults and our skins should have a decent thickness by now. Let the little things slide, as they are usually misunderstandings anyway.

For the record, I've never heard of a Buddhist telling anyone that they're going to Hell. Yes, there are Hells in the Pali canon, and yes, you can end up in them for a very long time (some hundreds of thousands, some billions of years) but that still isn't *forever*, either. I'm also not sure on the specifics of how people get sent there.

That aside, I personally also ascribe to the Moen/Monroe model of astral space. According to that model, both the Heavens and the Hells can essentially be thought of as an astral equivalent of World of Warcraft. They're constructs where people go for a while in order to get what they expected while they were alive, but they're not the real final destination.

Moen's model suggests that there is a scenario with "Oversouls," or "Disks," which send out what we know as individual ego complexes/personalities/souls into physical space as probes, in order to learn. It is implied that the scenario is fractal in nature, with each Disk itself merely being the probe of a larger Disk, recursing back into infinity.

Ave,

Petrus... that's a whole new discussion and nothing to do with this thread... although... it being the 'do not preach' thread, I may suggest we don't preach here. You are entitled to your view of whatever it was you replied to, but the post made by Tigeress was in no way to be taken as a serious philosophical debate, it was purely an over the top example.

My advice: Don't take everything so fucking seriously... relax.

Blessings,

LoD

No. Not between people that can act in a civilized manner.

Not spitting in peoples' faces, for example.

I don't think that was the point, Petrus.

So that was an intentional derail?
