Potatoe peel pies, bacon and egg flan, and cream cheese and raisin rolls. Long story.
Short version, I got resoundingly told off for wearing a red poppy rather than a white one, until the German dancer came across and rescued me. 'where did you get the cornflower?' 'In Flanders fields; the cloth-hall at Ieper.' I'd have left it at that, but the German carried on 'see, the white poppy is a fashion statement; the cornflower is our remebrance. He understands better than you do'. If looks could kill you'd probably have one fewer member. So we planned the meal for tonight. The little pies, and I've had three tries before getting them eddible, for my wife's grandfather who was an English civilian deported from Guernsey after the invasion and died in the Laufen camp. The flan because there's not time to get Simon, our local butcher, to make another batch of wartime sausages, but for my mother, who spent every summer cooking for convalescent soldiers, and the rolls for the Berlin airlift. Giz laughed. 'My mother could never stomach dried fruit after that. Could you squeeze Juergen and Uta in?' Just about. But again it was a case of 'if looks...' The dancer who had told me off was being blanked. Tough. Juergen defied the Berlin wall when he was a border guard (compulsory national service) and it took Uta almost two years to figure out a way through Sweden to join him here in the UK. They now have two children and three grand-children. The veg to go with the flan? All three of us said 'broccoli' in unison. Laughter. One thing all the generations have in common. blessings ffetcher
