I make my own non-combustible incense. I'm still trying to figure out the right ratio for cones, and then I'll try my hand again at stick incense.

I'm working on several blends now, to compliment the oils I'm doing (for the etsy shop which should be up in a few weeks). It's so much fun experimenting I would WAY rather do this than work. <g> Experimenting with a Forest blend, several lunar mixes, an Avalonian scent, a Dark Goddess blend - there's actually about 30 oils, I'll be doing well if half my incenses turn out as well. I know the Forest one is intoxicatingly lovely and evocative.

I make incense all the time. Here's a hint: the best-burning incences are composed of aromatic herbs, flowers, spices and oils in a base of woods and resins. Clean cedar cat litter ($6-$8 a big bag at pet shops or larger groceries) makes a great, low-cost, neutral wood base. Gum Arabic is usually cheaper than frankincense, as is copal, but if you have access to a sweet gum tree that you can tap, you can get liquidamber (styrax) for virtually free.

I've been wanting to post these. They're not perfect, I was limited by what I had on hand.

HOOF AND HORN Incence of the Horned God.

benzoin
cedar shavings
cedar tips
oak moss
three leaves of oak
pine pitch and needles
a few drops oil of pine
and oil of ambergris, civil, or musk

If you like colored incense you can use a few drops green dye.

I made hand rolled stick incense for the first time on the Yule weekend I just came back from - awesome!

We used copal, but I want to try frankincense, clove, nutmeg and cinnamon - my personal favourites.

I also use a lot of the pre-made stick & cone stuff - when I was in China the first time, I fell in love with a sandalwood incense that you get in a coil - it has taken me years to track it down here - that is pretty much my standard around the house.

I must admit, I do love getting charcoal blocks and burning fresh herbs and spices or some of the heady church blends you can buy (I have a Church suppliers on my side of town *grin*).

I purchased some powdered patchouli, and powered frankincense with the best of intentions... but time will tell!
