Old Norwegian

Constraint gives scant choice;
a naked man is chilled by the frost.

Old Icelandic

Constraint is grief of the bond-maid
and state of oppression
and toilsome work.

Anglo-Saxon

Trouble is oppressive to the heart;
yet often it proves a source of help and salvation
to the children of men, to everyone who heeds it betimes.

As always, Leben - tell me the story... my rusty memory only provides me with ice...

And I enjoy your elegant rationale behind your striking illustrations!

Well, this is one case where I think the rune poems are pretty clear! I wished to illustrate here the different magnitudes of 'need,' from the most immediate (the Norwegian rune poem), to the less immediate (in terms of life preservation) 'need' of the heart -- in the Anglo-Saxon poem. The Norn in the background pulls the strings of fate, and the power of the stars to direct are reflected through her -- though the strings do not impel, they do compel. Our fate is that line through time which we follow as a result of the flow of least resistance, our destiny is that which we must work for by moving against what fate has in store for us. Perhaps our fate is inescapable, but that's no way to live, in my opinion ... Was there something specific?

As for ice ... that is the next rune, Isaz
