Default The "Vision Quest".... Black Elk Speaks

by Black Elk
A Vision Quest is an experience of deeper understanding of Nature and Spirit. It is a ceremony practiced by American Indians. To prepare for this "insight" one must first cleanse the body and mind by going through a Inipi or sweat lodge. Then with the help of a Holy Man is told certain things and must go to a spot, usually on a holy mountain, and stay 2 or 3 days
During this time no food is eaten and one does not sleep but spends the time in deep prayer and observation. Many times, but not always, there is a vision. This vision is then shared with the Holy Man to help learn of its meaning. Sometimes the meaning is not shown for several years afterward.

This is part of a vision quest I was told to share with all who may be interested.

Once, I went to pray at the top of the sacred mountain of my ancestors.
As I climbed to the top I heard voices singing as the wind blew the leaves. At the top I saw, made from many stones, a large circle with a cross inside. I knew from my teachings that this represented the circle of life and the four directions. I sat down by the edge of this circle to pray.
I thought this is only a symbol of the universe.

"True," a very soft voice said. "Look and you will see the Center of the Universe. Look at every created thing."

As I looked around I saw that every created thing had a thread of smoke or light going from it.

The voice whispered, "This cord that every created thing has is what connects it to the Creator. Without this cord it would not exist."

As I watched I saw that all these threads, coming from everything, went to the center of the circle where the four directions were one place (the center of the cross). I saw that all these threads were tied together or joined here at this spot.

The voice spoke again, "This is the Center of the Universe. The place where all things join together and all things become one. The place where everything begins and ends. The place inside everything created."

That's when I understood that all of creation, the seen and the unseen, was all related.

The voice spoke one last time, "Yes, now you know the Center of the Universe."

I pray to the four directions.....hear me.
I pray to the West which gives us rest and reflection.
I thank you for these gifts for without them we could not live.
I pray to the North which gives us patience and purity.
I thank you for these gifts for without them we could not live.
I pray to the East which gives us energy and emotions.
I thank you for these gifts for without them we could not live.
I pray to the South which gives us discipline and direction.
I thank you for these gifts for without them we could not live.
Grandmother, share with me your wisdom, and I thank you for this gift. Grandfather, share with me your strength, and I thank you for this gift.

Cool MonSno,the is a whole heap of medecine to be found within the Sweat Lodge....I used to use one for a while for greater insight.

I have never met creator, closest I have spoken to is TYR,who resembles *father sky* as far as I can make out.

Everything is attached at source,& those who are aware can eat your soul while leaving you *alive*,just disconnected & rotting from within.

In great love,

DW

good post MonSno...........I have never been on a vision quest........I guess I am a bit scared, as I know that if I do a real bear will come to me and that scares the shit out of me............

On my path I have been so blessed, animals have come to me........I have not had to go out and quest them as per old native rituals........*I strongly beleive in the ritual* I am very careful what I ask for because for some weird reason the animals keep gifting me with their life, where as in the vision quest there is usually no loss of life.

There definatly is a lot that can be leart through going through the rites. There is another that I have heard of but am somewhat aprehensive about that one. In that one one is wrapped in a heavy blanket, almost bound and suffacated sensation is present. Yet it is similar to the notion of the vision quest and sensory deprivation.

Truthfully that does not suprise me. It seem's today the phrase is used to extremes but most people do not really know what all it entails.

I've done small ones but never a full blown holyman initiated and monitored one. That I think would be interesting to undergo though I am not sure what I might find. Still I think it would be interesting to do.

Heh heh, like stay in bed 3 day's for Xeper....

All manner of thing's can be revealed to the Indian on Vision Quest, their main Totem, many, many thing's.

Sweat Lodge is for discussion with the ancestor's,or anyone who has pre-deceased you who may have something unresolved to discuss,or something important.

I knew a guy called Running Elk,a brother of a guy I met online who was killed in action in Iraq a few years ago.

I went to source & was sent directly to the sweat lodge(astral)...had a few joust's with the live brother in astral,in love.He was scared of the dark.

Very Authentic as you realise MonSno....must be something in the Elk line of Totem which is good at sourcing this information.

Great Love,

DW

Did that one once when I had pnemunoia and a high temperture. Had some really interesting things revealed to me. Met some really interesting creature's as well.

Perhaps but the journey to find their power animal was different. Totems are a whole different story as to most Antive tribes a totem was assigned to a family group or clan not to an individual.

Sweat Lodge is for discussion with the ancestor's,or anyone who has pre-deceased you who may have something unresolved to discuss,or something important.

I've also sene it used to find one's guides. But yes also to talk to the shades of ones ancestor's or the spirits of the First Nation.

That does seem to be right about Elk.

I still LOL when I think of an interview with the singer Tom Jones when he reveals that he was in bed for day's with a temperature,I wonder what he realised.

I am with you completely on the Indian Clan thing Mon Sno,I was particularly amazed at the intactness of the Indian clan system..

Many aspect's of the Scot's Clan's were persecuted through the ages,so as many changed their names, particularly Clan Warlock's.(Gregor's & Williamsons)..I am from metalurgist aspect of clan culture from my mum's side, the Connor's(changed name)....I only self realised when becoming aware of the full extent of clan culture from the Indian's.

Another aspect I am familiar with is the Ghost Dance, particularly Sitting Bull's Ghostdance shirt & trouser's which I used to stare at for hour's as a kid.(it spent 100 years + in Glasgow)

Once realised,it was like it had alway's been, just never recognised the sign's fully.

Doe is my favourite sexual animal, can run for day's only stopping for sip's of water.

Dunno Elk's qualities, other than great traveller/navigator & concern for the herd.

*elk*.........stamina, ability to travel for long distances.......its best defense is to out run its preditor....the elk shares its abilites to go for the long haul and not give up tooo soon
Also their is a time to spend with friends of the same sex, yet also with the opposite.............
that is just what I remember off the top of my head........

What I know about deer is that they have the gift of unconditional love to share............they love without fear, gentle

The Clann's of Scotland are one that is always with me. My mother's side comes down from the Clann Morrison (sorry can't think of how to spell the Mac version) from the Isle of Lewis in the Hebredies. Father's line has parts of the Clann O'Siochru from Ireland in thier lineage.

I do know there were hidden names for many of them but have not found a good source for what those names were. I think there were also sub-clann names like wolf or bear from some writings I saw but can't prove that either.

Saddly I can not prove beyond a doubt about the Native American heritage in my blood line. I have been told I have (had) a grandfather that was a shamanic practioner but never had a chance to meet him.
