Default Stone Identification tips

Here's a basic list to post along with any stones you wish to post here. by giving this info it will make it easier for people to help identify the stone.
It's no guarentee that you will get the stone identified but it increases the chances.

provide a clear picture of the stone. make sure the photograph lighting is the same as it is in regular lighting. and make sure it's as clear as possible.
providing a dark, blured image, with the wrong color will decrease the chances of getting the stone identified. Also using just the photograph will get a slim chance of identification.

what color is it?
(just in case you have a camera that has problems with lighting this will help out people greatly.)

what is it's hardness?
(using the MOH's hardness scale it can help determine how hard is the stone in question. one method is using a scratch test.more of it later)

what is it's dimensions or a brief desription of it?

Where did you get it or find it?
(like for example did you find it in a lake, road, cave, etc. also what country or area you found it in. this helps greatly)

What known minerials are in the area you found this stone?

MOH's Scale
10diamond9corundum (ruby, sapphire)8beryl (emerald, aquamarine)7.5garnet6.5-7.5steel file7.0quartz (amethyst, citrine, agate)6feldspar (spectrolite)5.5-6.5most glass5apatite4fluorite3calcite, a penny2.5fingernail2gypsum1talc

Talc 1
Gypsum 2
Fingernail 2.5
calcite,penny 3
Fluorite 4
Apatite 5
glass 5.5-6.5
spectrolite 6
quartz 7
steel file 6.5-7.5
Garnet 7.5
aquamarine 8
saphire file 9
diamond 10

test your minerial against other points to get a good idea of its hardness.
using your finger to scratch it means that the hardness of it is 2.5 or softer. if not then it's harder than 2.5

next scratch it with a penny. if you can't then the hardness is between 3-6. Calcite for example is a 3 on the MOH's scale. that means a piece of quartz and a penny can scratch it but your finger nail can not.

to give a further example:
fingernail 2.5
piece of glass or a steel knife 5.5-6.5
piece of quartz 7
saphire file 9

Here are also some links to help you identify your stones

also if thse still are exhausted then go to the nearest museum of minerial place in your are to identify the stone. For example in New York City,N.Y. USA. you would go to the American Museum of Natural History and go to the geology dept. for them to help you identify the stone. Also don't forget to bring the stone with you as they might want to do tests on it.

This is an interesting link

Do you find any of the artificial or altered ones work energetically at all?

That's interesting. I only have direct experience with citrine: I have a double-pointed, short citrine wand which I suspect is artificially created.

When I first interacted with it in the shop, I felt a big unblocking around my gut/solar plexus and I've always found later interactions with it positive, personally.

most citrine that is on the market especially for metaphysical tools is heat treated. i should have an identification in there of natural and heat treated in there.

I couldn't find it although I was looking at some of the pictures on here:

http://www.littlegemsrockshop.co.uk/...g/CITRINE.html

It's kind of like this:

Rather than:

or this:

It doesn't specify the first one is natural, however, it does say these are natural:

i saw the site and the colors. no natural citrine will be that color for the first and last pic. my guess is the Brazilian ones are heat treated as a lot of amethyst sold on the market comes from Brazil.

Yes, I'd be inclined to agree especially having seen the middle pictures

That's interesting.

It would also be interesting if I could get hold of some natural citrine to see if they felt any different energetically.

it depends on how it is made and the person . i would love to see an addition in the citrine thread as it will be a little offtopic here for your findings. but that link has natural citrine on there and the second and third pics you posted are the natural deal.
