R J Stewart's book that is the only book that gives a commentary and ionterpretation of the Vita (life of merlin) is wonderful! It explores how Merlin can be seen in the vita to be a triple form being, a Melchizadek like figure. From Prophet, King to "Priest." For the story of Merlin in the Vita is far different to most romanticised modern versions that see him tied in with Arthur. With the Vita we see Merlin as a mysterious child, born of an abscent father...and a mother that is a princess. We can see this in the Rowley play that bears the name of a certain William Shakespear on the front cover (probably just written by Rowley though)

The Birth of Merlin; or, The Child hath found his Father is a tragi-comedy, printed in 1662, and attributed on the title page to Shakespeare and Rowley. In this play, Merlin is represented as the offspring of the Devil and Joan, the sister of a clown; and he is born, not only with a beard and the faculties of a man, but with the gift of prophecy. The Devil seeks to carry off Joan, but Merlin rescues her, and imprisons his father in a rock. Allied to this comic business is the story of Constantia and Modesta, the two daughters of Donobert, who wishes them to marry two nobles; they prefer to become nuns. Rowley himself probably acted the clown, who is the best character.

Stewart also has a book on this which I own, which is remarkably difficult to obtain.... this book isnt all that interesting though.

Stewart goes on to show though that the vita follows the standard pagan wheel of life/seasons...

remarakbly as he shows, the Vita also contains the imagery of the tarot card the hanged man.....at least 3 or 4 hundred years before tarot even appeared! As such Stewart used the Vita to create his merlin tarot...which is further expanded in the "Complete Merlin Tarot"

but anyway....
