Default Alltime Favorite Cookbooks

Add your own list! These are my old standbys, I am adding new ones and shifting how I cook and eat nowadays, but this lot still stand up.

1) Joy of Cooking, new revised version: if you only get one serious cookbook, this should be it

2) The Way to Cook, Julia Child

3) The New York Times Cookbook, Craig Claiborne

4) Simmering Suppers - Harrowsmith series - easy, one pot meals and some real keepers.

5) The Good Cook, Recipes and Techniques - my first serious cookbook is a series, and I use it to this day. Great resource.

6) The Cooking of Southwestern France, Good Food from Morocco, and The Slow Mediterranean Kitchen, all by Paula Wolfert. I think she's genius, love her work immensely.

7) Sacramental Magic in a Small Town Cafe, Peter Reinhardt (Brother Juniper)

8) World Vegetarian, Madhur Jaffrey - anything by her, another culinary master

9) Marcella Hazan, all her books; for authentic Italian she is supreme

10) The Splendid Table, another superb (Northern)Italian cookbook, by Lynn Rosetto Kasper

11) Classic Indian Cooking, Julie Sahni. If you only have one Indian cookbook, this should be it, IMO

12) Real Greek Food, Theodore Kyriakou and Charles Campion - fabulous

13) Chez Panisse - any of Alice Waters books, she's wonderful

14) Maida Heatter's book of Great Desserts - I'm not a sweets person but this is classic

15)Authentic Mexican, Rick Bayless...yum yum

16) The Harrowsmith series are good beginner's books, most recipes are easy and straightforward but give excellent results.

I also loove any of MFK Fisher's works, or Elizabeth David's essays for Vogue, as food writers these two are the creme de la creme.

What are your favorites?

The Cake Bible - Rose Levy Berenbaum
Gourmet Everyday
Mexican Everyday - Rick Bayless

Nigella's Christmas by Nigella Lawson is brilliant. I have so many cook books it's hard to choose. My first was a Betty Crocker cokbook brought fom Saudi Arabia of all places by my Dad many moons ago.

My other favourites are Nigel Slater's Real Food, all of the River Cafe cookbooks and all Nigella's books, especially How To Be A Domestic Goddess.

I have my own little book of recipes that I have been gathering/creating since I was very little, that's a good one too if I do say so myself.

This is a great topic, I need to go look through all my cook books now.

The Ottolenghi Cookbook was a publishing phenomenon. His follow-up, Plenty, looks set to repeat the trick, with new recipes and updates on dishes devised for his New Vegetarian column in Guardian Weekend magazine. Here's an exclusive taster of what's on offer

The recipes look really really tastey!

"The Everything College Cookbook" is the only cookbook I have bought. My mom had this Betty Crocker cookbook that was yellow and hardcover since I was a tiny tot. I've used that many a night when trying to figure out what I wanted to eat. But most of the time I look for recipes online.
