Unfortunately it's an attitude that I've been brought up with, very consistently. Although yes, I was being hyperbolic about the suicide comment.

Again, we of the mid-life simply don't exist. A few that come close, for me:

Michelle Pfeiffer, fiftysomething, as Hera:

We need more of these.

I myself look forward to that phase, I hope I will be in good health when I turn 50-60'ish. Would love to have that gray hair, but not sure how my hair would turn out. It might be that it turns into an awful greenish/darkbrownish/grayish mess, and I might have to color it more bright gray with highlights in order to get the look.
No matter, I picture myself as this longhair, scarves and skirts, a bit wrinkly, earthy lady with rosy cheeks We'll see how that goes.

^ And that was only the looks part. Mentally, anything might happen. I hope I will still be on the shamanic/healer/herbalist path, and that I am well established in it.

And by that time think of how much you will have learned and be able to do. Not to minimize your knowledge right now, but I often think of my 70s - 13 years from now, which is a long time - but what I'm aiming for is more skill, published books, a thriving little school where I can pass on a legacy. And another 20 years to be a healthy, active beautiful old lady.

Growing older in a positive way starts in the mind...and establishes itself in lifestyle choices and practises. I am sure you will be a force to be reckoned with!

Was reading and found this. Still may not be a perfect fit, but I like the thought behind it.

http://www.patheos.com/blogs/hearthw...pentadeia.html

Quote:
– Why was there no place for a sexually active non-mother?
– Why, if a woman is barren, does she become a Crone, when rarely would a 20 year old wish to be named a Crone?
– Why does it begin with a pubescent Maiden? Is there no place within the Goddess for the pre-pubescent Girl?
Additionally, I looked up the four fold goddess:

http://www.sagewoman.com/issues/sw-74/sw-74t0609.pdf says:
Quote:
Anyone who looks at a calendar or almanac
— or up into the sky every
night for a month — can easily see that the moon
doesn’t
have three phases; oh, and yes, we live longer than the
ancients did. It’s time to set aside the old paradigm and
adopt a new one. I propose a four-fold goddess for the
modern woman
http://www.beliefnet.com/columnists/...d-goddess.html
Quote:
He also compares the Maiden with air, the Mother with Earth
and the Crone with water. Fire, any one? If women in our mid years are not about
fire, we are not about anything. Our bodies are burning up alive. Our passions
are rekindled. And our patience is fried. To a crisp!
The book mentioned in the second article:
Amazon Amazon
Quote:
The Matriarch is but one of thirteen empowering archetypes presented in this book. From Daughter to Blood Sister, Mother to Amazon, Sorceress to Crone, this groundbreaking work reveals the grand pattern of women's lives, rich and complex, beautiful and mysterious.
Fera, this especially seems like something you'd like!
http://www.patheos.com/blogs/pathsth...her-and-crone/
Quote:
While originally it was intended to describe certain supposed trinities of goddesses, it has since been applied erroneously to human women as well. Neither deities nor humans seem to do so well when shoved into archetypal pigeonholes

The spousal unit was talking about this with Angela Magara, a dear teacher and mentor of hers. Spousal Unit said she would probably want a "curmudgeoning" before she had a croning.

Angela noted that she was at a phase in her life where her kids were grown and completely independent, so she didn't feel like she was in the Mother phase anymore, but that she didn't yet feel ready to accept the mantle of "Crone." "Mostly," she said, "I'm just a bitch."

haha, that's gold.

All in favor of making the new system: "I'm a bitch, I'm a lover, I'm a child, I'm a mother (etc)" say aye!

That system sounds much more up my alley!
